Yasmeen Baig is a first-generation American and a Virginia native who launched her design career in Richmond. She pulls influence from her Pakistani and Moroccan roots into her work through multiple mediums. In 2013 she won the Teri and Shari Malone Foundation Award which fueled her interest to study within the Arts. Baig’s family is involved in denim manufacturing in Morocco, allowing her to explore and experiment this avenue at an early age when she fell for the profoundness of creating bespoke garments specific to the individual’s needs.
She works at a Kinetic Imaging studio and was selected as a Research Assistant for a collaboration between the VCU Fashion Design and School of Nursing programs. This began her work with wearable technology and creating responsive garments. Through travel, exploring engineering practices, and technology, Baig creates pieces to this day that continues to draws inspiration from culture and functionality to create.

As an ode to sustainability and its concept Baig is working on clothing that can find its way back to the environment as quickly as it came into it. After working with a recycled wool and sourcing fabrics from local vendors, she began to see how to ferment seeds into the garments.
Currently, Baig is continuing her research in biodegradable fabrics as well as growing them. To the left is an image of grass that grew after three weeks on felted, recycled wool.
